Project Life Cycle Relevance with the SDLC-Samples for Students
Question: Discuss about the Similarities and Differences between the SDLC and the PRINCE2 method. Answer: Introduction: Project methodologies is a short term for project management methodologies, first came in light in the year 1960. The initiative for this process to come into light occurred when companies or business organizations wanted to do their existing and future projects in a more efficient and structured way. The major aspects included collaborating and communicating with different departments of the same or different organizations to develop a smooth flow. This report discusses about the various project management methodologies available today. This report further discusses broadly about two such methodologies. Discussion: Since the early times, the project management methodologies has evolved and new topics of discussion has been added to the methods (Burke, 2013). Now-a-days, project management methodologies are implemented by many companies and business organizations for the sole purpose of making a project with a start and end. Definition and role of methodologies: The project management methodologies are a process of initiating, planning, beginning of work, controlling and closure of work to achieve the required objectives (Burke, 2013). A project is a temporary process that is implied for the making of a new product or service to meet the requirements needed by a company or organizations. The main challenges of the methodologies are the successful completion of the goals in the presence of constraints. These constraints include the scope of the project, budget, time and quality. The second challenge is the process of getting the necessary input materials to complete the project. The role of project management methodologies is to control the management process through ideas of decision-making and problem solving thereby ensuring the requirements of specific objectives and processes to be met. Generally, project management methodologies provide a skeletal framework for the concerned authorities to implement them in a systematic manner. Various methodologies: Many methodologies are present which help in the successful completion of the project. In spite of the adopted methodology, emphasis should be given to meet the intended objectives. The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) is a collection of terminologies and guidelines, which is required for project management (Ojeda Reusch, 2013). This guide is a process-based guide that describes the work needed in terms of processes. This guide includes three aspects (input, tools and techniques, output). The processes included in this guide include initiating, planning, executing, monitoring-controlling and closing. Projects in Controlled Environment (PRINCE2), is a management method that is structured (Lianying, Jing Xinxing, 2012). The main emphasis of this method is given on dividing the project into structured stages that are managed and controlled. The various processes used in this method include starting, initiating, directing, controlling, product management, boundary management and closing. The systems development life cycle (SDLC), is a process, which is mainly used in places of information system and software engineering for the planning, creation, testing and making of the system (Batra, Malik Dave, 2013). The various processes in this method are initiation, system concept development, planning, requirement, design, development, testing, implementing, maintenance and disposal. The waterfall methodology involves the successful implementation of processes that is seen as a sequential flow of processes (Newton, 2016). The main phases are conception, initiation, analysis, design, construction, testing, implementation and maintenance. Agile methodologies involve the response required to unpredictable outcomes through increments, iteration and feedback (Dingsyr et al., 2012). This section of the report discusses about the various similarities and differences between the SDLC and PRINCE2 methodologies. Both of the methodologies are used for project management purposes. In addition, both of the methodologies have the same structure of initiation and ending. However, these two methods are not entirely same. For instance, the SDLC method is terminated by the end evaluation of the product whereas the PRINCE2 method closes the process by terminating the project. The SDLC method also differs from PRINCE2 process by its application in small and limited budget projects. Project life cycle: The project implementation should be done by achieving the required sets of goals. Each project has a start, middle and end. The major processes are initiation, planning, implementation and closure (Burke, 2013). The initiation process includes the identification of the resources that will be required for the completion of the project. The basic need of the project is also identified. The planning process involves focusing of the report in terms of detailed requirements. The implementation phase involves the execution of the plan to achieve the objective. Lastly, the closing phase involves the completion of the project and getting the outcome. The SDLC and the PRINCE2 methods are same as the project life cycle. They also include the same four processes in its implementation procedures. However, both the methods are a little bit detailed in terms of processes where the steps are divided further for simplification. Conclusion: Thus, it can be said from the report that all the different project management methodologies are created for the sole purpose of project management.
